Everything you need to know about Fable

Julia31 MAY 2026
A young heroine with a sword stands in an enchanted forest, gazing at a distant castle city as the golden Fable title glows beside her.

After years of waiting, the time has finally come. The first gameplay of the Fable reboot is live. We’ll tell you all the ins & outs about the new game, what it has to offer and what we can still expect from it.

What is Fable?

In a dark, misty forest the adventurer approaches cautiously, facing a gigantic creature lying half-hidden among the trees and shadows.

Fable is a series of RPGs (roleplaying games) developed by Lionhead Studios. After a decennium of waiting, the reboot of the original games is finally near. This time developed by Playground Games. You may know these creators from their successful game series Forza Horizon. For the first time, this new Fable game will be an open world fantasy RPG. We’ll show you what this new game has to offer.

The gameplay of Fable

On wide palace steps, richly decorated, a young woman smiles as she hands a sword to an armoured man with long dark hair.

The singleplayer gameplay of Fable already looks very promising. You start as a child – a character that you can fully customise yourself – and grows up in the streets of Albion, together with about 1,000 NPCs (Non-Playable Characters – all the other characters in the game). There you can grow into a beloved landlord of all homes in Albion or a despised slumlord. The choices in this game are broad and your words and deeds have real consequences. Good and bad deeds will be remembered and determine how the characters in the game react to you. Playground Games has outdone themselves in this particular aspect: every character has their own personality, job, social environment and own voice actor. Therefore, every interaction feels unique and adds extra depth to the story. In addition, you can basically date, marry, divorce and get kids with almost any NPC (with a few exceptions). With that, Fable offers everything you may expect from an open world game. You can also choose from different jobs, such as blacksmithing.

In a sunlit forest the heroine swings a heavy hammer at small grey creatures that rush towards her across the grass and flowers.

Besides the roleplaying part, there’s also a prominent action side to Fable where you fight against hobbes and trolls. Another change compared to the original Fable is the beloved companion: this time you won’t get a dog anymore. Why this choice has been made, has not been told. The official teaser does promise us a different companion instead: a horse.

Is Fable a standalone?

A young adventurer walks through a lively medieval street, lined with flowers, market stalls and chatting villagers beneath crooked houses.

Not much is known yet about the storyline of the new Fable game and whether it's connected to the previous instalments. The developers describe the game as a reboot: the characters and events from the original games aren't directly related to this new title, but they do share the same lore within the Fable universe. So, we can probably expect subtle references to the original games. At the same time, the developers emphasize that it's definitely not a sequel, so we can assume this game is intended as a standalone title in some sense. More information about the game's storyline will be revealed later this year.

A cramped medieval town of timbered houses and high arches rises in the shadow of an imposing castle towering on the hill.

Fable will release in February 2027. Fable was previously always exclusively for Xbox, but this time it will – besides the Xbox Series X|S – also appear on the PlayStation 5 and PC, right from release. Keep an eye on this page for all new information and when pre-orders drop.
